My dog is attached to his food bowl?

My 2 year old Shih-tzu male is attached to his food bowl. I never bother him when he is eating, but when he finishes, I like to take his plate up and wash it. When I reach for it, he growls and shows all of his teeth and there is nothing left in his plate. I have to get the broom and rake the plate to me and while I am doing this he is barking and constantly biting at the broom. We go through this everyday, every week, every month. How can I break him from being attached to his bowl. I even tried changing bowls but it did not help. And he won't take s. He bit at me once and I popped his behind with newspaper and he bit my leg and drew blood. He is a wonderful dog otherwise and long as you do not mess with his food bowl.
