Woke up to see black figure hovering over boyfriend?

Ok, for starters I don't generally believe in paranormal activity or have experienced anything like this before, but last night I woke up just after 4 in the morning, turned to my boyfriend and was shocked to see what appeared to be a black cloud? But not whole, almost netlike. I continued to stare at it, petrified, my eyes wide open and didn't realise I'd begun to grip my boyfriend until he looked at me and said, "you're hurting me" (which he had no recollection of in the morning.) When I looked back, the shape had gone, so I tried to get back to sleep but almost straight away heard footsteps right outside the door. I eventually got back to sleep, but when we spoke in the morning he told me this isn't the first time this has happened and that he's had dreams of a black figure chasing him more than once when he was younger.. Does this mean anything to anyone or is it just creepy coincidenses?!
