How to make the camera on my laptop (PC) work?

so my laptop has a camera on it but i cant use it. perhaps there is some sort of software i have to download? i have tried to use webcam, skype, etc. but it always says "camera not detected" as if there was not in fact a camera on my PC but there is and i can see it. i have had the laptop for at least 8 months
