What kind of fertilizer is best for flowering trees & shrubs?

The spikes that you hammer into the ground, or the water soluble fertilizer, or the granules that you just sprinkle on the ground? I live in Southern California and this is for azaleas, camellias, and a Crepe Myrtle.
