Change careers into Information Technology?

I want to change careers into information technology, I am currently in an entirely different field, and am only computer savy from a user standpoint. What is the best way, where do I start to get the necessary training to get a microsoft or cisco certification? I have been looking around, but its difficult to know where to start to get the basics to advance to being able to take certification exams.
